FAQs

What is Making Tax Digital?

Making Tax Digital is HMRC’s initiative to move the UK tax system online. It means keeping digital records and submitting your VAT or income tax returns using compatible software – no more paper records or manual submissions.

Who needs to follow MTD rules?

If you run a VAT-registered business, you already need to follow MTD rules. From April 2026, self-employed people and landlords earning over £50,000 will also be required to comply. It’ll expand to more businesses over the next few years.

How Do You Register for Making Tax Digital?

You can register for MTD yourself via the HMRC website, or we can take care of the whole thing for you – no stress, no jargon.

If you’re going DIY, here’s what you’ll need:

  • A Government Gateway account for your business (you can create one during the process if you don’t already have one)

  • Your business details like VAT number or UTR

  • MTD-compatible software to keep digital records and submit returns (we can help you choose the right one)

What Are the Benefits of Making Tax Digital?

With everything stored and submitted digitally, there’s much less room for manual mistakes. Say goodbye to missing receipts and last-minute number crunching.

What happens if I don’t follow MTD rules?

HMRC may issue penalties if you fail to comply with MTD. These could include fines for late submissions or not using the correct software. The best way to avoid this is to work with an accountant (👋 hi!) who knows the ins and outs of MTD.

Can I be exempt from Making Tax Digital?

Yes – but only in limited cases. If you have no access to digital tools due to age, disability, location, or religious beliefs, you can apply for an exemption through HMRC. We can help you with this process if you’re unsure.
